Mumbai to Surat is one of western India's busiest business travel corridors. Surat's diamond trade, textile industry, and chemical sector have created a constant flow of travellers between the two cities. For many of them, a cab is the preferred option — no station queues, no fixed departure times, and door-to-door convenience.
The 280 km journey via NH-48 takes 5–6 hours under normal conditions. But "normal" on this route has a lot of exceptions — and this guide explains all of them.
Route Overview
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Distance | 280 km |
| Drive time | 5–6 hours (normal traffic) |
| Route | NH-48 via Thane, Bhiwandi bypass, Vasai, Vapi, Kim, Surat |
| Toll cost (approx.) | ₹200–₹280 |
| Best departure | Before 7 AM or after 9 PM |
The Route Explained: Kilometre by Kilometre
- 1.Mumbai to Vasai (0–60 km): The Western Express Highway through Andheri, Borivali, and Mira Road is the most congested part of this journey. Before 7 AM, this runs clean in 45–60 minutes. After 9 AM on weekdays, expect 90–120 minutes just for this section.
- 2.Vasai to Vapi (60–145 km): Once you cross the Maharashtra–Gujarat border near Vapi, the highway opens up. This is the fastest section of the route. Vapi is a natural stop for fuel and refreshments.
- 3.Vapi to Kim (145–245 km): Steady highway driving through Valsad, Navsari, and Kosamba. The road quality is excellent here. This section usually takes 2–2.5 hours.
- 4.Kim to Surat (245–280 km): The entry into Surat district. The Kim stretch has ongoing construction (2024–26) which creates slowdowns. The Ring Road entry is the smoothest way into the city.
Traffic Reality Check: When to Avoid
The single biggest time-waster on this route is the Mumbai Western Express Highway between Andheri and Mira Road. If you leave Mumbai after 8 AM on a weekday, this 50 km stretch alone can take 2+ hours.
- ✓Best departure: 5–7 AM — clear highway, reach Surat by 11 AM–12 PM
- ✓Also good: After 9 PM — night highway driving, reach Surat by 3–4 AM
- ✓Avoid: Friday 3 PM–8 PM — worst traffic on WEH, plus Surat entry gridlock
- ✓Avoid: Sunday evenings from Surat — heavy return traffic towards Mumbai
- ✓Peak season: Diwali week, Navratri, and Holi — extremely high demand; book 48–72 hours in advance
